“As a board member of Kentucky Press Association (KPA) for many years and president in 2008, I recognized the challenges the organization was beginning to face as it rode the coattails of an industry facing numerous challenges. My mission as president was to see the organization plow through a strategic planning process. The goal was to develop a road map for future KPA presidents and boards along with the organization’s staff to have to effectively deal with the changing environment while continuing to represent members in the best way possible. Having participated in the development of numerous strategic plans over the years I knew the task would be overwhelming without assistance, a facilitator without a bias perspective. The executive director, David Thompson, and I interviewed four candidates for the job. Darryl Armstrong quickly rose to the top as our first choice. After just a couple of meetings the strategic planning committee quickly learned why he was the right choice. Dr. Armstrong immersed himself in the project with thorough research and thoughtful planning. He was a masterful guide through a process that was both daunting and uncomfortable. In the end his 50 plus page report became what he called ‘the rock’ to implement action plans over the next several years. While the real work now begins, KPA is better poised to become an even better ‘source of excellence’ for its members. Dr. Armstrong played an integral role.
