Partnerships Lead to Remediation Success as well as Project Recognition
A Lockheed Martin ESH remediation project that was completed last summer in Akron, Ohio, continues to receive recognition for its success on two fronts: transforming a cleanup site into a pristine park, and taking an integrated team approach that incorporated community input and enthusiasm throughout the transformation.
The Lockheed Martin team consisted of ESH Remediation technical staff members, Mission Systems & Sensors (MS2) communicators and ESH Remediation communicators. The team’s integrated approach has garnered praise from environmental agencies, local government officials, conservation groups and, most recently, from Lockheed Martin itself.
Earlier this month, the team received a Comet Award, an award given by Lockheed Martin Corporate Communications for excellence in communications. The team won in the Integrated Communications category. Its efforts have garnered several external awards from national and international business communications organizations as well.
The remediation project had many successes — most importantly, the completion of the site cleanup and restoration. The project serves as a Lockheed Martin best practice, because it was the combined talents of the technical staff and communicators that enabled the technical team to complete the project on time and under budget.
A community’s trust is critical to the success of an environmental cleanup, because community concern or outcry can impact regulators’ decisions and project timelines. The integrated community outreach efforts strengthened the Corporation’s relationship with all of the stakeholders, and, in turn, contributed to the project’s success.
The team’s integrated efforts included:
- Informing and educating community members, regulators, City of Akron officials and conservancy groups about the cleanup efforts throughout the project;
- Gathering community and regulatory input;
- Providing public education on the value of natural streams and wetlands; and
- Inviting the community to events such as the opening celebration for the park.
“Working closely with Communications definitely contributed to the success of the project and our ability to come in under budget,” said David Gunnarson, Lockheed Martin project manager. “The proactive approach gave us credibility. We communicated regularly with stakeholders and, as a result, they took Lockheed Martin seriously and trusted us as partners who were committed to doing the right thing.”
L. Darryl Armstrong and Kay Armstrong of ARMSTRONG and Associates Behavioral Public Relations led the communications effort for the EESH team.
“This project has received more communication awards than any project we have been associated with the past decade,” Darryl Armstrong said. “We are honored to have been a part of this dynamic and successful team.”
